The Skyrail has been voted "Australia's best major tourist attraction". Considering the number of tourist attractions that exist in this country, that's no small feat, and should be a pretty clear indication that the Skyrail is worth a visit.
The officially-titled Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, located in Cairns, is a unique and groundbreaking experiment in environmental tourism. This is a 7.5km cable car journey that takes you across the top of ancient tropical rainforest, travelling only metres above the canopy and affording you incredible panoramic views of the forest below.
From the comfort of a six-person gondola cabin, you are exposed to the open air and can see, hear and smell your wild tropical surroundings. This is the rainforest like you've never experienced it before.
Skyrail's Caravonica terminal is located just 15 minutes drive from Cairns city. At the other end of the journey is the Kuranda terminal. In between are two rainforest mid-station, Red Peak and Barron Falls, where it's possible to alight from the carriage and explore the surroundings. A network of boardwalks and look-outs will take you past the main attractions, and the state-of-the-art Rainforest Interpretation Centre provides an educational backdrop.
